About the Role
The Flight Standards Service mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world by setting standards, providing certification, and conducting oversight of airmen, air operators, air agencies, and designees. We also promote the safety of flight of civil aircraft and air commerce by conducting certification, inspection, surveillance, investigation, and enforcement; establishing regulations; and managing the system for registration of civil aircraft and airmen records.
What You'll Do
- →The Director, Office of Foundational Business, serves as a key executive leader within the Flight Standards Service with responsibility for leading enterprise-wide business, safety management, certification, training, and organizational support functions that enable the effective execution of the Flight Standards safety oversight mission, as well as the Civil Aviation Registry.
- →In the discharge of these duties and responsibilities, the Director exercises executive leadership and program direction over five Flight Standards divisions.
- →The Director administers a budget of approximately $130M and provides executive direction and oversight to over 450 employees, including direct supervision of two executives and 5 L-bands.
- →Specific responsibilities include: Provides strategic direction, policy leadership, and executive oversight for programs supporting the FAA's Safety Management System (SMS) framework and State Safety Program (SSP) obligations, ensuring organizational consistency, regulatory compliance, operational effectiveness, and continuous improvement across Flight Standards.
- →Creates a clear vision for the Office of Foundational Business in its mission to provide administrative, staffing, workforce development, budget, logistical, and safety risk management services to the Flight Standards Service.
- →Oversees national programs involving aircraft registration and airmen certification, publication and dissemination of inspector guidance and public safety information, occupational safety and health administration, and the development and delivery of specialized leadership and technical training for FAA aviation professionals, Department of Defense personnel, and industry stakeholders.
- →Collaborates extensively with senior FAA executives, government agencies, industry representatives, and international aviation partners to advance aviation safety objectives, support organizational transformation initiatives, and promote a proactive, data-driven safety culture throughout the National Airspace System.
