About the Role

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) seeks a senior executive to serve as Director of the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality (CBHSQ). This leader directs the nation's behavioral health statistics, epidemiology, data collection, and program evaluation activities; advises senior leadership on behavioral health policy and research; and oversees data systems and analyses that inform national policy, funding, and public health decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Provides executive leadership and strategic direction for the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality (CBHSQ), the Federal Government's lead organization for behavioral health statistics and epidemiology.
  • Directs the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of national behavioral health data collection, epidemiological studies, statistical systems, and service system evaluations related to substance use and mental health.
  • Oversees the Center's budget, workforce, and operational priorities while establishing national data and research priorities, advancing innovative survey methodologies, and ensuring the quality, integrity, and utility of behavioral health data used to inform federal policy, program development, prevention, treatment, and recovery initiatives.
  • Serves as SAMHSA's principal advisor and national spokesperson on behavioral health statistics, epidemiology, and evaluation, providing expert guidance to the Assistant Secretary, HHS leadership, the White House, Congress, federal agencies, states, tribes, researchers, and other stakeholders.
  • Leads cross-agency strategic planning and collaboration, oversees national evaluation and data collection initiatives, develops evidence-based policies and performance measures, and ensures data-driven decision-making across SAMHSA programs.
  • Represents the Agency in high-level national and international forums, manages multidisciplinary professional staff, and directs partnerships that strengthen behavioral health surveillance, research, and public health policy nationwide.
