About the Role

Join the Indian Health Service and make a meaningful impact on the oral health of American Indian communities. As a Dentist, you will provide comprehensive, patient-centered care, manage complex cases, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team while advancing health equity and improving community well-being. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

What You'll Do

  • Provides comprehensive dental care, including examinations, diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative procedures, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, and emergency dental services.
  • Independently evaluates and manages complex dental conditions, adapting treatment approaches as needed and coordinating care with medical providers for patients with complex health or behavioral needs.
  • Delivers patient education and preventive care services, ensuring patients understand treatment options, risks, and post-treatment care while addressing diverse cultural and socioeconomic needs.
  • Provides consultation and professional guidance to healthcare providers and dental staff regarding dental health issues and their impact on overall patient health.
  • Maintains clinical records, participates in quality improvement and infection control activities, supports program operations, and contributes to clinical committees and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Requirements: (Continued) IHS Selectees whose duties and responsibilities require them to work permanently, temporarily, or occasionally in an IHS healthcare facility must comply with the IHS Employee Immunization Policy related to vaccine-preventable diseases, consistent with recommendations for healthcare workers.

  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children.

  • The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements.
  • If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
  • Physical Demands: The work involves walking, sitting, standing, reaching and bending in the assessment and treatment of patients.
  • Additional Information: (Continued) Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
  • IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
