About the Role

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (Pharmacist) position is located at The Fayetteville VA Medical Center (VAMC) within Emergency Medicine. The primary function of the clinical pharmacy specialist (CPS) in emergency medicine is the provision of evidence-based pharmaceutical care services through direct and indirect interaction with patients and providers.

What You'll Do

  • As the medication expert, the EMCPP is a champion for ED quality improvement (QI) efforts involving medication safety initiatives.
  • Major Duties include but are not limited to: Collaborates with ED providers to develop, implement, and maintain systems that promote desirable clinical outcomes through use of safe, cost-effective drug therapies.
  • Reviews and evaluates medication regimens for clinical effectiveness, drug selection, dosing, contraindications, side effects, potential drug interactions, and therapeutic outcomes.
  • The EMCPP will document and communicate findings in the electronic health record.
  • Participates in the training and orientation of pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, pharmacy staff and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Responsible for coordinating and supervising the activities of postgraduate residents in the emergency department, as preceptor.
  • Provides training and education related to medications used during emergency response to first responders (when requested).
  • Responsible for the daily operation status of various aspects of the pharmacy programs.
  • The EMCPP prioritizes work and makes administrative decisions when supervisory pharmacists are not available, or in instances where immediate decisions are required.
  • Pharmacy Service Policy and Procedures, VA Regulation and state and federal Pharmacy laws will serve as operational guidance.
  • Responsible for the safe and appropriate distribution or dispensing of medications.
  • Ensures that all Pharmacy Service and other regulatory policies are compliant with regards to medication labeling, inventory management, formulary management, PBM initiative, equipment maintenance and timeliness of service.
  • Provides supervision of Pharmacy support staff in the conduct of distributive functions.
  • Work Schedule: Compressed overnight; 7 days on, 7 days off Compressed: Available Telework: Ad hoc at the Supervisor's discretion.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
