About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

What You'll Do

  • This is a part time position - compensation will be prorated based on hours actually worked.
  • Properly collect, handle, accession, and label specimens according to but not limited to safety, patient identification and infection control policies.
  • Instruct Medical Center or CBOC personnel on preliminary procedures in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Users guide.
  • Evaluate the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiological state of the specimen properties is maintained.
  • Inspect all blood products received in blood bank upon arrival.
  • Monitor expiration dates, and storage temperatures daily.
  • Inspect blood products for contamination, breakage and return products prior to the expiration date.
  • Release routine and emergency use blood and plasma according to standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor and replace temperature charts according to policy.
  • Evaluate and monitor the performance of test procedures using manual and/or automated techniques in accordance with established protocols.
  • Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction; troubleshoot and implement corrections.
  • Maintain records for instrument failures and corrections.
  • Select, perform, evaluate and monitor the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
