About the Role

This position is located on the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest in Roanoke, VA. Serves as a civil engineer on a Forest Service Unit with responsibility for planning of transportation systems. Assignments cover work projects that involve all aspects of a complete transportation plan. What You'll Do

  • Duties described are at the target grade level for this position, GS-12.
  • Develops an integrated transportation system plan for the Forest using geographic information systems, aerial photographs, topographic and geologic maps, and on-the-ground reconnaissance.
  • Locates and verifies planning objectives for proposed transportation system including analysis of resource, protection and activity management plans as they relate to transportation systems.
  • Prepares or reviews environmental analysis, Environmental Impact Statements, and special reports with regard to transportation engineering.
  • Provides engineering input into the interdisciplinary planning process for natural resource development activities involving transportation system.
  • Analyzes existing routes for suitability of various road or trail management alternatives.
  • Reviews on-the-ground feasibility layout of transportation planning and is responsible for review and certification of adequacy of all road locations made.
  • Prepares economic analysis of road management alternatives considering the costs of operations and maintenance, replacement, reconstruction, or closure, along with resource costs and benefits.
  • Prepares project plans for transportation system, including overall project scheduling, major engineering requirements and detailed requirements of budgetary costs.
  • Formulates, updates, and monitors the Forest Capital Investment Program for roads and bridges.
  • May develop project proposals and makes recommendations on funding using program direction criteria.
  • Provides engineering expertise into the Forest's Access and Travel Management process.
  • Reviews annual travel management plans with each sub-unit for completeness and adequacy and conformance with overall transportation system management objectives.
  • Provides professional advice and consultation in the area of transportation system planning.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S.
  • Citizen or National.
