About the Role

The incumbent serves as a staff Biomedical Engineer in the Healthcare Technology Management department. The section is responsible for the medical equipment management program at the Orlando VA Medical Center (OVAMC). The OVAMC provides primary, secondary and tertiary services through the Lake Nona Medical Center and Outpatient Clinics in Viera, Daytona Beach, Lake Baldwin, Kissimmee, Clermont, Tavares, and Orange City. A Community Living Center (CLC) is located on the Lake Nona campus.

What You'll Do

  • Duties Include, but not limited to: Provides the OVAMC with professional biomedical engineering support.
  • Biomedical Engineering work required, in addition to knowledge and skill in engineering disciplines, includes a background in physiology and anatomy and a practical ability in specialized subject matter areas, such as computer applications, electronics and mathematics.
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of the biomedical engineering profession, including principles, theories, concepts, and practices.
  • Serves as a technical advisor on the medical center's Equipment Committee.
  • Serves as part of a team responsible for the overall program of medical equipment maintenance, including planning, selection, consultation, installation, application, and maintenance of medical equipment.
  • Manages a QA process that provides oversight to assure that medical instrumentation at the OVAMC is safe for use on patients; appropriately accurate in its results; available for use within a reasonable timeframe following failure; and, that the program is as cost-effective as possible.
  • Participates in Joint Commission preparation and continual readiness for various other inspections, working with clinical and administrative staff including the Maintenance & Operations Section of FMS.
  • Coordinates alerts and recalls for the facility.
  • Participates in the Environment of Care Committee.
  • Serves as a team member for process improvement teams and root cause analysis teams, as assigned.
  • Acts as a consultant to clinical departments regarding biomedical engineering questions and problems.
  • Ability to develop a curriculum for a continuing education program for clinical staff that addresses the safe and effective use of medical equipment and technology.
  • Coordinates purchase, planning, construction, installation, and in-service training stages of major biomedical instrumentation projects, such as Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Radiology suites, and Operative Care suites.
  • Functions as a project engineer for remodeling projects when assigned.
