About the Role

This position is located in the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, & Supplies (DMEPOS), Technology, Coding and Pricing Group (TCPG). As a Biomedical Engineer, GS-0858-14, you will influence policy and regulations, advise on legislative matters in Medicare and health care, set program criteria, evaluate effectiveness, and analyze complex issues.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as a technical advisor for technology and pricing analyses for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS), and other components as needed.
  • Convey technical knowledge and provide advice needed to make policy decisions at all levels of the agency regarding classification and coding, coverage and scope of benefits, and payment for DMEPOS medical devices and supplies.
  • Research and analyze the costs and features of new versus older DMEPOS technology to determine pricing according to statutory rules.
  • Lead teams of biomedical engineers and certified orthotics and prosthetics at CMS and Medicare contractors to assess technology, determine benefit categories, and classify items under the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
  • Lead projects related to improving and/or updating HCPCS codes for DMEPOS items and services.
  • Apply current technical knowledge of DMEPOS products to update older codes so they accurately reflect today’s technology and patient services.

Requirements

  • Education Requirement: In addition to meeting the qualification requirements, all candidates must have the following educational requirements: A.
  • Possess a bachelor's or higher degree in engineering.
  • Possess current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.-OR- C.
  • Have successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)2 examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.-OR- D.
  • Have successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A.
  • The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A.-OR- E.
  • Have successfully completed a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology and have at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
