This position is located within the Kansas City Veteran's Affairs Medical Center (KCVAMC), Facilities Management Service (FMS). The position serves as the Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic for the In-House Construction section of FMS and is responsible for the installation, repair, and operation of all refrigeration, air conditioning and air handling parts and equipment to be installed, modified, retrofitted, removed, and maintained as part of any In House Construction Projects at the KCVAMC.
What You'll Do
- →Recognize and use tools of the trade to detect refrigerant leaks, and assemble, dissemble, overhaul, and install refrigeration, air conditioning, and control equipment and related systems ln a journeyman like manner.
- →Use knowledge of electricity to safely perform maintenance, adjustments, or repairs on refrigeration, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and control equipment and related systems.
- →Select proper materials including, but not limited to, piping, sheet metal hangers, fasteners, heating instruments, motors, pumps, valves, couplings, flanges, etc. to accomplish maintenance, repairs, adjustments, modifications, or installation of refrigeration, air conditioning, and control equipment and related systems.
- →Use refrigerant recovery and evacuation/vacuum systems to affect repair, recycling, and recharging of refrigeration and air conditioning systems in accordance with EPA guidelines.
- →Properly document activities for each unit and record refrigerant use.
- →Determine appropriate quantities and types of chemicals necessary to properly treat liquid systems associated with cooling towers, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and related systems.
- →Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD02067A Physical Requirements: The incumbent may be required to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods.
- →Frequently works from ladders platforms, high places and cramped spaces.
- →Considerable climbing, walking, and stooping is also required for this position.
- →Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50 lbs. either alone or with others.
- →Working Conditions: The work is usually done both indoors and outdoors and is often dirty, dusty and greasy.
- →The incumbent is subject to work in all types of weather and in work areas that may be hot, noisy, and close quartered.
- →The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, electrical shock and burns, and is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
- →Incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as ear protection, hard hats, safety toe shoes, gloves, respirator, and protective clothing, as appropriate/required.
