About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • The Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) - Compensation and Pension is a registered nurse who utilizes critical thinking in the application of advanced clinical health care knowledge and skills, in conducting comprehensive history and physical examinations to Veterans and separating/retiring Service Members.
  • Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Performs examinations for registry purposes for the facility Environmental Health Registry (EHR) Programs within the guidelines of the Health Outcomes Military Exposures (HOME) Office.
  • Provides support through the application of clinical expertise/ leadership by working with clinical and administrative services to achieve facility C&P and EHR program goals throughout the VA NCHCS.
  • Generates exam reports utilizing Disability Benefit Questionnaires (DBQs) in the Compensation and Pension Record Interchange (CAPRI) for the official documentation of the Veteran's or Service Member's C&P examination, and pertinent forms for the official documentation of Environmental Health Registry (EHR) Exams.
  • Carries out a full range of histories, physical examination, and assessments of the Veterans'/Service Members' known as well as unexpected or previously unknown medical conditions and other clinical findings in the context of the C&P evaluation for disability and fitness for duty determination, and the Environmental Health Registry (EHR) Examination for registry purposes.
  • Initiates and/or recommends laboratory tests, diagnostic studies and/or specialty referrals in the context of the C&P evaluation based on current VA Medical Center and Service policies, and ensuring service is delivered appropriately in a cost effective and financially responsible manner.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the C&P Service and the ability to work effectively with Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), Department of Defense (DoD) and Environmental Health Registry Program (EHR) Program.
  • Functions as a resource person to other C&P examiners and EHR clinicians, and effectively communicates with other VHA staff and VBA personnel.
  • Assists the Chief of C&P with the development and implementation of new programs, studies and policies applicable to C&P and EHR examiners.
  • Formally or informally instructs staff about topics relating to both C&P and EHR.
  • Educates Veterans about the C&P process and helps them better understand it.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
