About the Role
The RN (Surgical Coordinator) ensures that quality nursing care is rendered to patients in accordance with policies, procedures, and the standards of Surgical Service and the VA Medical Center, under the guidance and directives of the Chief Surgical Service or designee.
What You'll Do
- →Duties included but not limited to: Assisting with triaging secure messaging and phone calls.
- →Many of these calls are educational in nature, complex scheduling of appointments (ex.
- →CT before clinic) or medication refills.
- →Screen upcoming clinics and confirm requirements are met prior to upcoming appointments (Xrays prior to appt, labs prior to appt, etc.) Follow up with surgical clinic patient 'NoShows'.
- →Assist with obtaining nonVA records for provider review.
- →Ensuring open consults are scheduled timely, to include coordinating any necessary testing prior (labs, imaging, etc.).
- →Ensuring consult gets clinically & administratively closed after work is completed.
- →Assist with entering the surgery request in DSS PeriOp Planner.
- →Assist with entering standing pre-operative orders in CPRS for provider to sign.
- →Serve as a consistent point of contact for the assigned surgical section.
- →RN will call the patient prior to surgery to review preoperative instructions, assist with FMLA or other forms, etc.
- →Post-operatively, patient needs are assessed to include home health care, social work, prosthetics/equipment, return appointments, post op medication instructions, etc.
- →Monitor EMR to ensure that the surveillance plan, as outlined by the provider, is being followed.
- →Examples include CT scan in 6 months, labs in 3 months, etc.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- ✓Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.
